Professor Hyunglok Kim of GIST delivered an invited technical seminar at K-water Research Institute on the topic of Earth Observation foundation models and their applications in water resources.
The seminar was organized to share recent developments in AI based Earth observation technologies and to discuss their potential applications in water resources research and future R&D initiatives at K-water. Researchers from K-water Research Institute participated in the event and exchanged ideas on emerging opportunities at the intersection of artificial intelligence, satellite remote sensing, and hydrological science.

During the seminar, Professor Kim introduced the latest advances in Earth Observation foundation models, with a particular focus on learning universal representations from large scale satellite observations across multiple sensors. The presentation highlighted how these models can support a wide range of hydrological applications, including soil moisture estimation, drought monitoring, precipitation analysis, vegetation monitoring, and Earth system prediction.
The seminar also addressed future research directions, including the integration of foundation models with physics based hydrological models and digital water management systems. Participants discussed the potential of these technologies to enhance operational water resources management and improve the use of satellite observations for environmental decision making.
The seminar concluded with an active discussion on future collaborative research opportunities between academia and K-water.
